2 I’ll share with you my strategies and ps on how to best describe a picture in
less than 5 minutes. Being able to verbally describe a picture is an important
part of the Oral Test.
3 you’ll learn to talk about any given topic which is likely to come up on the
test. I'll provide you useful vocabulary that will help you speak with ease and
con dence.
You will also learn how to create and prac ce your own answers to the
ques ons the examiner may ask you.
But keep in mind it’s also very important for you to understand the examiner’s
ques ons.
So we'll look at the di erent types of ques ons that are likely to come up for
all of the topics.
And I’ll help you to prac ce and improve your listening skills so to be prepared
to sit the listening comprehension exam.
In addi on I’ve created the 7-week-guide which is your guide for this en re
module. This guide provides you with a day by day ac vity planner. If you s ck
to the plan and work through the content you have all you need to succeed!
The Sproochentest consists of 2 exams: the Oral Language Test and the Listening
Comprehension Test. In this Lesson you will learn about the contents of the Sproochentest,
how it is administered and FAQ so that you have a clear picture of what to expect on the day
you take the test.
Level required
The level of the Oral Language Test corresponds to level A2 of the Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages for oral produc on and interac on.
You will be evaluated on your use of simple language in describing your living condi ons,
educa onal background and ability to discuss familiar topics such as your family, job,
holidays, hobbies, daily ac vi es, food and drink habits.
Procedure
The Oral Language Test consists of two parts, Topics and Pictures:
Time
The complete Oral Test lasts approximately ten to twelve minutes.
Level required
The level of the listening comprehension test corresponds to level B1 of the Common
regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. The candidate can understand the main
professional interest when the delivery is rela vely slow and clear.’
Each part consists of an audio recording and recorded ques ons. Each recording is played
twice. A er each recording, you answer the mul ple-choice ques ons by indica ng your
Assessment
Candidates’ answer sheets are marked by two evaluators using a marking grid.
You will pass the Sproochentest if you obtain a minimum score of 50% on the Oral Language
Test. An insu cient score on the Oral Language Test can be compensated by your results on
the Listening Comprehension Test.
F REQUE NT LY AS KE D QUEST IO NS
In this lesson we need to think about how will your Luxembourgish language skills be
evaluated. What specifically is the examiner listening for? How will they evaluate
what you are able to say?
The oral part of the Sproochentest takes place in a room with 2 examiners, live.
One examiner will offer you a choice of 2 topics to discuss, you will select one and
then you will be asked quesFons about that topic. Next, the examiner will show you
three pictures, again you pick one and then you will describe the picture you
selected.
Please note: they will only evaluate the language you produce. They cannot guess
what you mean. Never think “Oh they know what I mean”. No they don’t - and they
won’t try!
So make sure you produce enough language and that you speak clearly and loudly
enough so they can hear you and evaluate you.
1. Vocabulary
They want to hear your range of vocabulary: do you use only a few words? For
example:
With the picture descripFon try to avoid repeaFng: ech gesinn but rather add variety.
2. Fluency
Here are three things the examiners oUen look for:
Ease of speaking is basically how easily you connect your sentences. If for example
you say:
Ech kommen aus Frankräich vun Toulouse. Dat ass eng grouss Stad an ech hunn do
bis 2010 gelieH.
It’s a nice smooth flow. Good fluency. But remember, fluency is NOT speed. You do
not have to speak quickly.
RepeHHon is when you repeat and repeat and repeat, for example:
Ech ... em, ech wunnen um Belair. Ech wunnen mat menger Famill. Ech wunnen säit 3
Joer um Belair.
You need to listen to yourself and try to self edit when necessary.
3. PronunciaHon
Accent versus PronunciaFon: You may have any accent, whether it’s Chinese, Indian,
French, BriFsh, Italian .... Having an accent when you speak Lëtzebuergesch is
inevitable! But you must demonstrate a control of the Luxembourgish pronunciaHon
characterisHcs.

pronounced like the English ch as in church but rather as an open mouthed och

ee sound as in sheet. The ee sound is always long.

It’s equally important to focus on the sound as the meaning of the words. That’s why
listening to spoken Luxembourgish is so helpful. Rather than reading words listen to
audios. Listen to the sounds.

Listen to the radio (RTL - Lifestyle / News or Eldoradio - Podcast) and listen first
carefully to the presenter’s pronunciaFon. Then listen again and try reading the
transcript (if provided) simultaneously!
4. GrammaHcal accuracy
The examiner needs to determine whether you have a grasp of key grammaFcal
elements:
- collocaFon
- noun/adjecFve agreement
- sentence construcFon
- verb conjugaFons
You should be aware of colloca7on. Do we say eng Dusch hunn or an d’Dusch goen.
The correct way is to say an d’Dusch goen or eng Dusch huelen. To have lunch is: zu
Më.eg iessen.
It is all about making sure you use the correct words that go together. The examiners
will be listening for your awareness and correct use of collocaFon.
Noun/adjec7ve agreement:
You must ensure that your adjecFves are in agreement with the nouns they are
describing. Depending on their placement (before or aUer the noun) they may
require an ending that agrees with the gender of the noun (masculine/feminine/
neutral/plural).
You will have an opportunity to pracFce this in the Noun /adjec7ve agreement
Exercise later in this module.
Sentence construc7on:
What is simple structure? Basically, simple structures consists of one clause, for
example:

Adjec>ves that describe masculine nouns - add “e(n)” to the end of the adjec>ve.

Let's first look at sentences without adjec>ves and then the same sentences with

Exercises
Now that we’ve reviewed the different treatment of adjec>ves, it’s >me to
prac>ce the noun/adjec>ve agreements by comple>ng the exercises included
in this module. You will find them listed out on the study plan.
Now it’s your turn! In the first few sentences I have helped you out by idenFfying the
noun’s gender (masculine, feminine, neutral, plural), next you will need to
determine its appropriate agreement with the adjecFve.
Remember to consider whether the nomina0ve, accusa0ve or da0ve cases are used.

This framework (A,B,C) will really help you tackle the task – keep in mind that many of the
pictures at the exam will be of places in Luxembourg or in familiar seangs like a home
with a family.
D. Useful vocabulary
Try sound as natural as you can. One way to achieve this is to avoid star?ng each sentence
with “In the picture I see…”. Rather try to create a flow from one visual element to the
next. Work on using a variety of vocabulary to help you describe what you see.

E. Record yourself
Aier you have wrigen down a “script” to describe each picture it is important to then
record yourself describing the picture.
First record yourself reading your “script” to get comfortable with your sentences and
words and pronuncia?on. Imagine yourself in the room with the examiner and de-
scribe the picture to him/her.
Listen to your recording and assess your pronuncia;on and fluidity.
Next, record yourself again, but this ?me do not look at your script, instead try to de-
scribe the picture on your own.
Now, listen to this second recording and check how long it takes you to describe the
picture. This ?me you might realise you needed more than 5 minutes.
Why is this important? To make you aware of your hesita;ons.
Describe the same picture a third ?me recording yourself again. You will no?ce an im-
provement, perhaps a few less hesita?ons, may be you described it within 5 minutes.
Keep trying un?l you are sa?sfied with the result: a fluid, clear descrip?on in a maxi-
mum of 4-5 minutes.
Send the descrip?on and recording to your teacher and ask them for feedback.
Keep prac?cing by describing all 6 pictures included in this course un?l you feel com-
fortable with this task.
As men?oned in Module 1 / Procedures, you will be shown three pictures by the ex-
aminer and you must choose 1 of the pictures to describe.
For example: you’ve chosen a picture of the “Schueberfouer” and you forget to men-

asked by the examiner. First let’s start with a typical ques&on you might be asked:

The examiner will recognize a memorised answer. They do not want to know if you
can memorize text, they do want to know if you can spontaneously produce
language on the spot.
It’s far easier to learn those 4 small words in a block than struggle trying to figure out

In this lesson we will look at the types of common ques5ons the examiner is likely to
ask you during the Oral Exam (the Topics discussion sec5on). In order to prepare for
this part of the exam, it is important to:
A) Familiarize yourself with the type of ques+ons you can expect from the examiner
(so there are no surprises!)
B) Prac5ce model answers to these ques5on types
Whatever topic you choose, if you can recognize these ques5ons and you can use the
model answer format to reply, it will increase your confidence and the fluidity of your
language output.
These ques5ons fall into 3 general categories that ask about preferences, sense of
5me and descrip5ons/explana5ons.
So now let’s get familiar with the seven different types of ques5ons you will
encounter and how to formulate the model answers with which you can reply.
Note: Where you see the words (verb) or (noun), subs5tute any verb or noun you
need depending on the topic and the same for the words (acDons, duraDons etc.).
1. GÄR Ques5ons
When you hear the word gär in a ques5on, the examiner wants to know if you can
talk about what you like doing. The word gär is the important word, it’s the clue!
Gär ques5ons follow this format:

the examiner gives you the verb and the noun/verb in the ques5on. Your answer
