Master the Sproochentest - Oral Exam

What will you learn in this course?


1 You’ll learn the prac cali es : how the exam is structured, the procedure of
taking the exam and how the examiners will evaluate your Luxembourgish.

2 I’ll share with you my strategies and ps on how to best describe a picture in
less than 5 minutes. Being able to verbally describe a picture is an important
part of the Oral Test.

3 you’ll learn to talk about any given topic which is likely to come up on the
test. I'll provide you useful vocabulary that will help you speak with ease and
con dence.

You will also learn how to create and prac ce your own answers to the
ques ons the examiner may ask you.

But keep in mind it’s also very important for you to understand the examiner’s
ques ons.

So we'll look at the di erent types of ques ons that are likely to come up for
all of the topics.

And I’ll help you to prac ce and improve your listening skills so to be prepared
to sit the listening comprehension exam.

In addi on I’ve created the 7-week-guide which is your guide for this en re
module. This guide provides you with a day by day ac vity planner. If you s ck
to the plan and work through the content you have all you need to succeed!

The Sproochentest consists of 2 exams: the Oral Language Test and the Listening
Comprehension Test. In this Lesson you will learn about the contents of the Sproochentest,
how it is administered and FAQ so that you have a clear picture of what to expect on the day
you take the test.

1. Oral Language Test

Level required
The level of the Oral Language Test corresponds to level A2 of the Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages for oral produc on and interac on.

You will be evaluated on your use of simple language in describing your living condi ons,
educa onal background and ability to discuss familiar topics such as your family, job,
holidays, hobbies, daily ac vi es, food and drink habits.

Procedure
The Oral Language Test consists of two parts, Topics and Pictures:

Part 1: Topic Discussion


The examiner proposes two di erent subjects/topics for discussion and you will need to
select one. You will then be asked ques ons about the chosen topic, allowing you to
demonstrate your command of the language.

Part 2: Picture Descrip on
The examiners will show you 3 pictures. They are all pictures of people. For example: people
celebra ng a birthday, or a family having breakfast, or people on the “Plëss” or at the
Schueberfouer. You will choose one of the 3 pictures and describe what you see. You have a
maximum of 5 minutes to talk.

Time
The complete Oral Test lasts approximately ten to twelve minutes.

2. Listening Comprehension Test

Level required

The level of the listening comprehension test corresponds to level B1 of the Common

European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for listening comprehension:


‘The candidate can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar ma ers

regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. The candidate can understand the main

points of many radio or TV programmes on current topics or ma ers of personal or

professional interest when the delivery is rela vely slow and clear.’

Content and procedure

The listening comprehension test is in three parts. You will hear

1 a radio news item

2 an everyday conversa on between two people

3 a discussion or presenta on of a speci c subject

Each part consists of an audio recording and recorded ques ons. Each recording is played

twice. A er each recording, you answer the mul ple-choice ques ons by indica ng your

answer on an answer sheet.

The test lasts about 25 minutes.

Assessment

Candidates’ answer sheets are marked by two evaluators using a marking grid.

3. Passing criteria

You will pass the Sproochentest if you obtain a minimum score of 50% on the Oral Language
Test. An insu cient score on the Oral Language Test can be compensated by your results on
the Listening Comprehension Test.

F REQUE NT LY AS KE D QUEST IO NS

Where does the Sproochentest takes place?


The exam takes place at the Ins tut Na onal des Langues (INL), 21 boulevard de la foire, L- 1528
Luxembourg. The INL is close to the “Glacis” at Limpertsberg.

Are the 2 exams on the same day?


Usually, they take place on 2 di erent days. You’ll receive a le er from the INL informing you about a)
the date for the oral exam and b) another date for the listening comprehension.
But upon request the INL organises once a month a day including the 2 exams.

Do I have to speak (monologue) during several minutes about one topic?


The oral exam is conducted in the form of a dialogue / interview between the candidate and the
examiner.

Do I have to introduce myself in the oral exam?


No, this is not requested.

Do I get the results the same day of the oral exam?


You’ll receive the results a er having taken both the oral and the listening comprehension tests. This
takes generally between 2 and 5 weeks.

Does the listening comprehension test takes place in front of 2 examiners?


The listening comprehension exam takes place in a big room and you’ll be seated with many other
students - each one at a separate desk.

How many mes can I apply to take the Sproochentest?


There is no limit to the number of mes. You can register again once you’ve received the results of the
previous test.

Where and how can I register?


You may register in person at the INL or submit the duly completed registra on form directly on the
INL’s webpage under the sec on “Ci zenship - Exam - Condi ons & Registra on.

When are the next tests being held?


The dates are posted on the INL’s webpage under the sec on “Ci zenship - Exam - Next sessions”.
Between mid July and mid August the INL is closed but the next sessions will be posted beginning of
August.

EVALUATIO N

In this lesson we need to think about how will your Luxembourgish language skills be
evaluated. What specifically is the examiner listening for? How will they evaluate
what you are able to say?

The oral part of the Sproochentest takes place in a room with 2 examiners, live.

One examiner will offer you a choice of 2 topics to discuss, you will select one and
then you will be asked quesFons about that topic. Next, the examiner will show you
three pictures, again you pick one and then you will describe the picture you
selected.

The second examiner will be evaluaFng your language output.

Please note: they will only evaluate the language you produce. They cannot guess
what you mean. Never think “Oh they know what I mean”. No they don’t - and they
won’t try!

So make sure you produce enough language and that you speak clearly and loudly
enough so they can hear you and evaluate you.

The examiner will evaluate the following skills:

- your range of vocabulary


- do you speak fluently without too many hesitaFons
- your pronunciaFon
- do you make grammaFcally correct sentences

1. Vocabulary
They want to hear your range of vocabulary: do you use only a few words? For
example:

Sport ass gu. fir d’Gesondheet.

Or do you have a wide range of words? For example:

Reegelméisseg Sport maachen ass wichteg fir meng Gesondheet.

Try using synonyms: instead of repeaFng normalerweis, use gewéinlech. Keep it
varied by using a mix of dann, dono or méi spéit ...

With the picture descripFon try to avoid repeaFng: ech gesinn but rather add variety.

2. Fluency
Here are three things the examiners oUen look for:

- ease of speaking / fluidity


- hesitaFon
- repeFFon

Ease of speaking is basically how easily you connect your sentences. If for example
you say:
Ech kommen aus Frankräich vun Toulouse. Dat ass eng grouss Stad an ech hunn do
bis 2010 gelieH.

It’s a nice smooth flow. Good fluency. But remember, fluency is NOT speed. You do
not have to speak quickly.

Hesita7on & Repe77on

HesitaHon is Um 7 Auer, err, emmm …, ech euhh…ginn

That’s your hesitaFon.

RepeHHon is when you repeat and repeat and repeat, for example:

Ech ... em, ech wunnen um Belair. Ech wunnen mat menger Famill. Ech wunnen säit 3
Joer um Belair.

You need to listen to yourself and try to self edit when necessary.

3. PronunciaHon
Accent versus PronunciaFon: You may have any accent, whether it’s Chinese, Indian,
French, BriFsh, Italian .... Having an accent when you speak Lëtzebuergesch is
inevitable! But you must demonstrate a control of the Luxembourgish pronunciaHon
characterisHcs.

Typically these characterisFcs include individual sounds:

er sound: Ech erwächen ëmmer um 7 Auer moies. er sounds like a short “a”

d sound: Ech fueren an d’Stad d’ is pronounced like a t.

och sound: maachen / kachen / Buch remember ch aUer the vowels a, u, o is not
pronounced like the English ch as in church but rather as an open mouthed och

vowel combinaHons:

ee sound: heeschen / een / ee Meedchen Do not confuse this sound with the English
ee sound as in sheet. The ee sound is always long.

äi sound: E Glas wäisse Wäin / mäin there is no equivalent in English.

vowel/consonant combinaHons:

eng sound: Ech hu keng / eng Duechter / Ech mengen listen to the video version of
this lesson and pracFce this sound with me and to make the difference with the
pronuniciaFon of meng.

It’s equally important to focus on the sound as the meaning of the words. That’s why
listening to spoken Luxembourgish is so helpful. Rather than reading words listen to
audios. Listen to the sounds.

📌 Advice 📌

Listen to the radio (RTL - Lifestyle / News or Eldoradio - Podcast) and listen first
carefully to the presenter’s pronunciaFon. Then listen again and try reading the
transcript (if provided) simultaneously!

4. GrammaHcal accuracy
The examiner needs to determine whether you have a grasp of key grammaFcal
elements:

- collocaFon

- noun/adjecFve agreement

- sentence construcFon

- verb conjugaFons

Colloca7on:

You should be aware of colloca7on. Do we say eng Dusch hunn or an d’Dusch goen.

The correct way is to say an d’Dusch goen or eng Dusch huelen. To have lunch is: zu
Më.eg iessen.

It is all about making sure you use the correct words that go together. The examiners
will be listening for your awareness and correct use of collocaFon.

Noun/adjec7ve agreement:

You must ensure that your adjecFves are in agreement with the nouns they are
describing. Depending on their placement (before or aUer the noun) they may
require an ending that agrees with the gender of the noun (masculine/feminine/
neutral/plural).

You will have an opportunity to pracFce this in the Noun /adjec7ve agreement
Exercise later in this module.

Sentence construc7on:

Two key elements of sentence construcFon will be evaluated:

a) Word order: ensure correct usage of verb 2. element/inversion in your sentences.


For example:

Normalerweis ginn ech owes um 6 Auer heem.

b) Simple or complex sentence structures:

What is simple structure? Basically, simple structures consists of one clause, for
example:

Ech wunnen an der Stad. Dat ass eng schéi Stad. Ech wunne gär do.

All three sentences are simple construcFons, just one clause.

Complex sentence structures join one or more clauses using conjuncHons, or


connecHng words, for example:

Ech wunnen an der Stad an ech wunne gär do. D’Stad ass schéin, mee et ass oH vill
Trafick.

ConjuncHons are words such as and an, but mee/awer, or oder, when wann

ConnecHng words are and then an dann, more precisely an zwar however
allerdéngs...

Try to use a good variety and range of connectors - you will find they are mostly
adverbs.

Verb conjuga7ons:

It is important to demonstrate you familiarity of verb conjugaFons:

hien/hatt/si geet
mir gi(nn)
Dir gitt
si gi(nn)

In Module 2, a list of useful verbs is provided. I highly recommend you pracFce the
verb conjugaFons for each.

Remember these three key elements to ensure your success:

Make sure to understand what is required from you.

Show that you are able to handle a social exchange - to make simple
conversaFon.

Demonstrate that you can talk about a topic and support your ideas with
examples.

ADJEC T IV E E ND ING RUL E

Luxembourgish adjec>ves can be found either before or aCer a noun. Depending on


their placement, adjec>ves may be declined (endings that agree with the noun)
based on the noun’s gender (masculine, feminine, neutral or plural) and the case
(Nomina>ve, Accusa>ve and Da>ve).

Your ability to use the correct agreement/declension of adjec>ves and nouns, is an


evalua&on criteria of the Sproochentest. So make sure you are familiar with this
concept and prac>ce, prac>ce, prac>ce!

1. Adjec)ves AFTER Nouns


When the adjec)ve comes a"er the noun, there is no declension required :

Den Hond ass grouss. The dog is big.


D'Kaz ass grouss. The cat is big.
D'Haus ass grouss. The house is big.
D'Kanner si grouss. The children are tall.
As you can see the adjec>ve does not change when it comes a.er the noun.

2. Adjec)ves BEFORE Nouns (Nomina&ve & Accusa&ve)


In the nomina>ve and accusa>ve cases, when the adjec>ve comes before the noun it
is describing, then there must be an agreement between the adjec>ve and the
gender of the noun.

Adjec>ves that describe masculine nouns - add “e(n)” to the end of the adjec>ve.
Adjec>ves that describe neutral nouns - add “t” to the end of the adjec>ve.
Adjec>ves that describe feminine or plural nouns - no new ending required.

Examples:
Ech hunn e groussen Hond. I have a big dog.
Meng Noperen hunn eng grouss Kaz. My neighbours have a big cat.

Mir hunn e grousst Haus. We have a big house.

Mir hu grouss Kanner. We have tall children.

3. Adjec)ves BEFORE Nouns (Da&ve)


The same agreement applies to the da>ve case. Although the da>ve declensions are
not part of your evalua>on, I wanted to share this grammar point with you here as it
will help you to improve your Luxembourgish.

Adjec>ves that describe masculine or plural nouns - add “en” to the end of the
adjec>ve.
Adjec>ves that describe neutral nouns - add “en”.
Adjec>ves that describe feminine nouns - add “er”.

Let's first look at sentences without adjec>ves and then the same sentences with
adjec>ves:

Hien seet dem Verkeefer Merci. He thanks the salesman.


Hien seet dem frëndleche(n) Verkeefer Merci. He thanks the friendly salesman.

Hien seet der Verkeeferin Merci. He thanks the saleswoman.


Hien seet der frëndlecher Verkeeferin Merci. He thanks the friendly saleswoman.

Ha` gë` dem Meedchen e Croissant. She gives the girl a croissant.
Ha` gë` dem klenge(n) Meedchen e Croissant. She gives the liBle girl a croissant.

Mir hëllefen eisen Noperen. We are helping our neighbours.


Mir hëllefen eisen alen Noperen. - We are helping our old neighbours.

Why do the following examples use the da)ve case?


Because verbs such as soen / ginn / hëllefen require the da>ve.

Now that we’ve reviewed the different treatment of adjec>ves, it’s >me to
prac>ce the noun/adjec>ve agreements by comple>ng the exercises included
in this module. You will find them listed out on the study plan.

FRAMEWORK & TOP TIPS

One key path to success for the Picture Descrip?on element of the exam is to prac?ce,
prac?ce, prac?ce! In this module you are given 6 exercises to describe 6 different pic-
tures. Make sure to work through each to improve your facility in describing things.

PART 1

To get started here is a useful framework to help you best describe a picture for the
exam.

This framework (A,B,C) will really help you tackle the task – keep in mind that many of the
pictures at the exam will be of places in Luxembourg or in familiar seangs like a home
with a family.

D. Useful vocabulary
Try sound as natural as you can. One way to achieve this is to avoid star?ng each sentence
with “In the picture I see…”. Rather try to create a flow from one visual element to the
next. Work on using a variety of vocabulary to help you describe what you see.

E. Record yourself
Aier you have wrigen down a “script” to describe each picture it is important to then
record yourself describing the picture.
First record yourself reading your “script” to get comfortable with your sentences and
words and pronuncia?on. Imagine yourself in the room with the examiner and de-
scribe the picture to him/her.
Listen to your recording and assess your pronuncia;on and fluidity.
Next, record yourself again, but this ?me do not look at your script, instead try to de-
scribe the picture on your own.
Now, listen to this second recording and check how long it takes you to describe the
picture. This ?me you might realise you needed more than 5 minutes.
Why is this important? To make you aware of your hesita;ons.
Describe the same picture a third ?me recording yourself again. You will no?ce an im-
provement, perhaps a few less hesita?ons, may be you described it within 5 minutes.
Keep trying un?l you are sa?sfied with the result: a fluid, clear descrip?on in a maxi-
mum of 4-5 minutes.
Send the descrip?on and recording to your teacher and ask them for feedback.
Keep prac?cing by describing all 6 pictures included in this course un?l you feel com-
fortable with this task.

F. Never stop looking around you….


Why limit yourself to 6 pictures? Get in the habit of looking around and describing
what you see. Out the car window, in your home, walking in town. The more you get
into the habit of looking and describing the easier your task will be on the day of the
exam!

PART 2: EXAM DAY

As men?oned in Module 1 / Procedures, you will be shown three pictures by the ex-
aminer and you must choose 1 of the pictures to describe.

Tip 1: Choose your picture carefully


Quickly scan the pictures and be careful to choose the picture that best represents
the greatest scope of your vocabulary. Ask yourself, “which of these two pictures can I
say the most about?” Make a quick visual inventory of the contents of each picture
and think about which of the two you will best be able to describe with your vocabu-
lary. Keep in mind that you’ve got a maximum 5 minutes to describe the picture you
choose.

Tip 2: Drill down with details


For each element of the picture you describe, drill down on the details. For example if
you start with the people in the image, think of all the details you can use to describe
the person from physical agributes (tall, short, to the clothing they wear, colours too).
You can use this for objects, loca?ons, ac?vi?es etc. Use as many vocabulary words as
you can.

Tip 3: Remember to use correct adjec;ve/noun agreement


When you describe a person or an object ensure you are using the correct agreement
between the adjec?ve and the noun it is describing. Don’t forget this applies to the
adjec?ves that PRECEDE the nouns. Your correct usage of the agreement is in your
pronuncia?on. For example, ensure you pronounce the final -e of the adjec?ve: e bloe
Pullover.

Tip 4: Speak un;l the examiner stops you


Usually the examiner lets you speak for 4 to 5 minutes without interrup?ng you. Once
they have heard enough of the language you produce or once the ?me is up they will
stop you.
That said, should you fail to men?on some key vocabulary they will ask you one or
two ques?ons to try and illicit this from you.

For example: you’ve chosen a picture of the “Schueberfouer” and you forget to men-
?on where or when it is. Then the examiner may ask you:

3- TOPIC - TOP TEN TIPS FOR ANSWERING QUESTIONS

Here are ten &ps that will help you successfully answer the ques&ons you will be
asked by the examiner. First let’s start with a typical ques&on you might be asked:

And your first response is: Nee!

Hmm, perhaps not the best answer, right? Then let’s get started!

TIP 1 – No one word answers


Simple yes / no answers are not a good idea. Such answers do not demonstrate your
vocabulary nor your ability with the language.

TIP 2 – Do not create long rambling answers


Expand your answers but not with words that do not address the ques&on.

Maacht Dir gär Sport?


Nee, ech maachen net sou gär Sport. Ech hu keng Zäit. Ech schaffe vu méindes bis
freides. Ech fuere moies fréi fort an ech kommen owes spéit heem an da kachen an

Hmm, That's a bit too long and if you no&ce, it does not address the topic the
examiner is actually asking about – you and sport. This answer does not reveal your
knowledge/vocabulary about the ques&on Do you like to do sports?

TIP 3 – Be direct and address the quesOon


So how much informa&on should you share, how much should you expand?
Start by always trying to answer the ques&on directly, say why and give an
example(s) if you can.

BeWer right? Try to add informa&on to your answers, informa&on that addresses the
topic of the ques&on while at the same &me makes it personal. For this ques&on, it is
about you and your rela&onship to doing sports.

TIP 4 – Be natural but pracOce!


Many people are nervous while taking the Sproochentest. That’s normal but the
more you prac&ce speaking the language the more confident you will become.
Prac&ce speaking with a teacher or a na&ve speaker as much as you can in the
months leading up to the test. When you can, use your Luxembourgish in the shops
or on the phone. It’s good to hear different voices, speech paWerns, speeds and
tones. The more your ear hears, the more familiar the language will sound to you.
This will help you gain confidence and feel more at ease. In the end you will sound
more natural.

TIP 5 – Don’t memorize


Don’t memorise answers for the test. Instead be familiar with the types of ques2ons
you will be asked and prac&ce formula&ng answers based on the model answers
provided in the module.

The examiner will recognize a memorised answer. They do not want to know if you
can memorize text, they do want to know if you can spontaneously produce
language on the spot.

TIP 6 – Do learn ‘blocks’ of language


New languages don’t always make sense to us, especially in their sentence/
vocabulary construc&on. Some&mes it is helpful to learn or acquire “a block” of the
language rather than struggle with its gramma&cal construc&on. When you acquire a
“block” you can then add these ready-made units of language into your sentences
and answers.

Think of the typical Lëtzebuergesch gree&ng:

It’s far easier to learn those 4 small words in a block than struggle trying to figure out
the construc&on of hello, how are you? Which in the end is not a direct transla&on.

TIP 7 – Listen carefully


Listen carefully to the ques&ons. Ojen they are filled with useful clues that will help
you with your answers. Ques&ons frequently contain the verbs, preposi&ons or
nouns which will help you formulate your answer. For example:

Where are you coming from now?

Ech komme vun doheem.


I am coming from home.

TIP 8 – Get to know the quesOons you are likely to be asked


In the next lesson of this module you will be introduced to the typical types of
quesOons you are likely to be asked at the exam. Knowing the type of ques&ons and
their construc&ons will really help you prepare and put you at ease during the exam.
You will also learn model answer types to these ques&ons. In the end, the more that
you can make this exam familiar the easier it will be for you.

TIP 9 – Can you please repeat?


If you are not sure you have understood the ques&on or of equal importance, you
understood the ques&on but did not hear all the words, ask the examiner to repeat
the ques&on:

Don’t worry, you won’t lose any marks if you ask the examiner to repeat a ques&on.
Your score is calculated on fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronuncia&on and

TIP 10 – Don’t stop!


Keep talking un&l the examiner stops you. If he/she does not stop you it’s because
they want you to keep producing language. But don’t worry if they interrupt you –
this can and should be expected.

ask you during the Oral Exam (the Topics discussion sec5on). In order to prepare for
this part of the exam, it is important to:

A) Familiarize yourself with the type of ques+ons you can expect from the examiner
(so there are no surprises!)
B) Prac5ce model answers to these ques5on types

Whatever topic you choose, if you can recognize these ques5ons and you can use the
model answer format to reply, it will increase your confidence and the fluidity of your
language output.
These ques5ons fall into 3 general categories that ask about preferences, sense of
5me and descrip5ons/explana5ons.

1. GÄR Ques5ons
When you hear the word gär in a ques5on, the examiner wants to know if you can
talk about what you like doing. The word gär is the important word, it’s the clue!
Gär ques5ons follow this format:

Note that Gär ques5ons are normally yes or no ques5ons and are easy to answer as
the examiner gives you the verb and the noun/verb in the ques5on. Your answer
should therefore start with a Jo (yes) or Nee (no) ….
Adding words like net, ganz, guer to your answer conveys to what degree you do or
don’t like something.

But there is no ar5cle for plural nouns.
