Preparing for TELC DTZ-B1 exam

Step 0:

Take this free placement test to check your level

https://learngerman.dw.com/en/placementDashboard

Step 1:

Start by reading the texts here

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Mu8zBOquWzOsSTKCGT5p2YukHfOE1RPQ?usp=sharing
and do the exercise with each text

Step 2:

Read A1 and A2 level texts on https://lingua.com/de/deutsch/lesen/#exercises. First read the text

aloud and do the exercise. Then listen to the audio alone without looking at the text. Next, listen to
the audio and read the text at the same time.

Step 3:

Listen to the audios on https://www.dw.com/de/das-sagt-man-so/s-32376. First, listen to the audio

only and see how much you understand. Then listen to the audio again while reading the
transcript/text/manuskript at the same time and at the end do the exercises given for each audio.

Step 4:

Read B1 level texts on https://lingua.com/de/deutsch/lesen/#exercises. Again, first read the text

aloud and do the exercise. Then listen to the audio alone without looking at the text. Next, listen to
the audio and read the text at the same time.

Step 5:

Read the texts on https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1nPxuh29KcrGfIJLsXk2dV8KhoTnXi5Ax?

usp=sharing and do the exercises.

Step 6:

Listen to all audio on

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/19IGuz6LI_UBWlWfRG7OdGtCuE_CbLsqY?usp=sharing.
First, only listen to the audio to see how much of it you can understand. Next listen to the audio
again while reading the transcript/hörtext.

Step 7:

Listen to all audio on

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1cPKqeSBsdF0kTxF3XHipG6Jba4oxo9gl?usp=sharing. First,
only listen to the audio to see how much of it you can understand. Next listen to the audio again
while reading the transcript/hörtext.

while reading the transcript/hörtext.

Step 8:

Now follow the book "Deutsch üben Hören und Sprechen", listen to the audios and do all the
listening exercises in the book. The book and audios can be found on
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1XpMrVII1KAf7UgpJeo4Ea7eqSoMzBlCp?usp=sharing

Step 9:

To prepare for the schriftlicher Teil of DTZ exam, you need to practice writing letters. On this link
https://docs.google.com/document/d/18Dv62YON71kSPo9Y4oKRctxhiVaw4uEv/edit?
usp=sharing&ouid=108871887717179777611&rtpof=true&sd=true you can find many different
situations to write letters. To see some sample letters that I wrote, go to
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1p_aqX96kqOIMv7QbCCVAQSCI7NGrPZ9H/view?usp=sharing. Write
at least 20 different letters to be well-prepared for the exam.

Step 10:

To prepare for the Vorstellung/introduction i.e. first Teil of the mündliche Prüfung, write 2-3
passages/paragraphs about yourself. This is the easiest part and you can memorize it as well. Just
write answers to the following questions and then keep practicing answering the questions verbally
again and again and record yourself, until you can easily introduce yourself.
1. Was ist Ihr Name?
2. Wie alt sind Sie?
3. Woher kommen Sie?
4. Seit wann leben Sie in Deutschland/wann sind Sie nach Deutschland gezogen?
5. Wo leben deine Eltern? Wie viele Geschwister haben Sie?
6. Was haben Sie studiert?
7. Was ist Ihr Beruf/was machen Sie beruflich?
8. Was ist Ihre Muttersprache? Wie viele Sprachen sprechen Sie?
9. Seit wann lernen Sie Deutsch? Wie haben Sie Deutsch gelernt?
10. Was sind Ihre Hobbies? Was machen Sie in Ihrer Freizeit?

Step 11:

To prepare for Bildbeschreibung i.e. second Teil of the mündliche Prüfung, go to

https://ichuebemeindeustch.blogspot.com/2018/07/bild-beschreibung-einkaufen.html and practice
writing descriptions of each picture. Descriptions are already given for each picture in this link but
there may be errors, so write your descriptions in your own words and do not memorize anything
from this link. Here are some sample descriptions that I wrote
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HWfDoT17fP4fUCEpnU5fDiugOKS4sRgR/view?usp=sharing

Tip: If you want to say/write something but don't know how to say it in German, use Google
translate and write what you want to say in English to see its German equivalent.

Step 12:

Once you have practiced writing descriptions of at least 20 pictures, it's time to practice doing it
orally/verbally. Ideally you should practice this with a partner. But if you don't have anyone to
practice it with, use the voice recorder function of your phone or any voice recording app. First read
the description you wrote and record it (and listen to it to see how you sound). Next, try describing
the pictures without reading/looking at the description you wrote, and again record yourself while
you do this.

B2 Page 2
Step 13:

After completing steps 11 and 12, you should have learned enough
vocabulary/expressions/phrases/sentences to describe any picture. Now find a partner, google at
least 5-10 new pictures that you haven't yet used and describe them verbally to your partner. Your
partner should ask you questions about the pictures that you should now be able to answer. In the
exam, the examiner will ask you a couple of questions about the picture, so think for a while and
write some possible questions about every picture and its topic and try answering those questions.

Step 14:

Now it's time to prepare for the third Teil of the mündliche Prüfung i.e. gemeinsam etwas planen.
For this, you need a partner to practice with.

Here you can find some written conversations between two people planning different events like a
birthday party, a trip, etc. Read these conversations first to understand what you need to do in this
part of the exam and what your planning conversations should look like
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ybRdsfARnf3ubxGcg6CsZXhCQ3bLUndz/view?usp=sharing

Step 15:

In this link you can find many situations to practice for the 3rd Teil of the mündliche Prüfung. Try to
do as many as you can, at least 20.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Y77jz1m6xj6kHD2sLDotPQcnU-7YpVWv/edit?
usp=sharing&ouid=108871887717179777611&rtpof=true&sd=true

In this link you can find some more situations for the 3rd Teil of the mündliche Prüfung, as well as
some Redemittel/phrases/sentences you can use https://drive.google.com/file/d/18
_gVkZd0CDwtQqTH05r19CNBY0a5jcZr/view?usp=sharing

Step 16:

Solve some modell/practice tests to familiarize yourself with the format of DTZ exam. Here you can
find one practice test and one model test along with their audio
https://www.telc.net/pruefungsteilnehmende/sprachpruefungen/pruefungen/detail/deutsch-test-
fuer-zuwanderer-a2b1.html#t=2

If you can, buy this book https://www.cornelsen.de/produkte/pruefungstraining-daf-deutsch-test-

fuer-zuwanderer-uebungsbuch-mit-loesungen-und-audios-als-download-a2-b1-9783060203741. It
has 4 modelltests.

Step 17:

Ideally, before the exam, take at least 10-15 hours of conversation lessons with a native German
speaker. You can do this with italki.com. OR if you can't afford, find a partner who is willing to
practice with you free of cost. This will help you gain confidence.
